The ARES group provides communication during emergency operations when other forms of public communications fail. Using even the simplest of radio setups and antennas, amateurs can communicate with each other for fun, during emergencies, and in contests. The practice they get for fun and in contests assists them in emergencies. They handle messages for police and other public service organizations during all kinds of emergencies.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when a disaster strikes. Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for membership in the ARES. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership.

SARA maintains some equipment for use with an emergency. The club insures that the equipment is ready whenever it might be needed.
